Destination: Murchison Falls National Park

It is one of the most beautiful and largest parks, wih an area of 3,893 square kilometres. It encompasses the northern region of the Albertine Rift Valley. The park derives its name from Sir Samuel Baker. He was a renowned game hunter, British explorer and governor- general of the Equatorial Nile basin. And the only one where all of the ‘Big Five’ are to be found; buffalo, elephant, lion and occasional leopard seen above the Nile while rhinos are being bred in a sanctuary south of the park – 40 to 50 of them are lined up for release into the wild by around 2040. Together with the adjacent 748 km² Bugungu Wildlife Reserve and the 720 km² Karuma Wildlife Reserve, the park is part of the greater, 5,308 km², Murchison Falls Conservation Area.
The park is bisected by the Victoria Nile, The mighty River Nile squeezes itself through a mere 7-metre gap to create the powerful, unrelenting explosion of water that is Murchison Falls. The mighty cascade drains the last of the river’s energy, transforming it into a broad, placid stream that flows quietly across the rift valley floor into Lake Albert. This stretch of river provides one of Uganda’s most remarkable wildlife spectacles. Gigantic crocodiles, hippos and a plethora of birdlife can be admired up close on a boat safari, while a safari game drive at dusk has a chance to spot predatory cats on the prowl for dinner. Chimpanzees can be tracked in nearby Budongo Forest, while near the park is Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary – re-introducing these magnificent giants back into Uganda.
